The earliest inhabitants of Zaire were the pygmies, followed by
the Bantus and Nilotic tribes. Leopold II, King of Belgium
formed an international group to exploit the Congo in 1876 and in
1877 Henry M. Stanley explored the Congo. The Congress of Berlin
from 1884-1885 organized the Congo Free State with Leopold as
King and principle owner. On June 30, 1960 the Congo became
independent. Widespread violence caused many Europeans to flee
the country and United Nations troops were sent in. On September
7, 1964 a People's Republic was established and many Europeans
were slaughtered. In 1974, foreign businesses were ordered sold
to Zairians. Serious economic problems persist as well as
corruption and government mis-management during the 1980s.
